Stripes and Cut-outs and Prints, Oh My!

Mar 5, 2013 at 5:58am by Alison a.k.a. NYC Recessionista

We are already in March so Spring is leaning around the corner, checking us out and thinking "that wardrobe needs some swing." Thanks to Alison for hooking us up with the right Spring trends! xxEB

I can’t believe we’re into March already! Which means that spring is coming THIS MONTH. Have you started shopping for spring yet? I’m Alison from NYC Recessionista and I haven’t, either. But don’t worry – we’ll get through it together! I am so beyond excited to be doing my fifth guest post for you! I’ve already shown you how to mix bargain basement & designer, how to season-swap, how to rock retro and most recently, how to work emerald, the color of the year.

I don’t know about you, but I get completely intimidated when I see the photos from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and hear what the designers have declared as the next big trends. Suddenly, everything in my closet feels so five minutes ago – but I wonder how I could possibly pull off some of those high fashion trends.

Well, after seeing the designs from the spring 2013 shows that took place back in September, I think there are PLENTY of ways us everyday women can work these trends into our wardrobes once the warmer weather makes an appearance.

In no particular order, here are the spring 2013 trends and my budget-friendly picks for how you can wear them.

    Trend#1: 50 Shades of Gray

Just as the name suggests, this trend takes its inspiration right from that kinky book we all inconspicuously read on the subway or under a blanket. Think leather, chains, collars and bustier tops. One thing you must pair with each of these fun pieces? Confidence.

    1) Bauble Bar gray chain wrap bracelet
    2) Gap studded loafers
    3) Modcloth shoulder to gleam on chain
    4) Urban Outfitters Spiked Chain Collar Dress
    5) Topshop mesh and devore bustier top

    Trend #2: Cool Waters

This next trend – which can be interpreted literally or figuratively – makes me long of going to a white sandy beach right now. Look for patterns of water and waves as well as ocean-y hues. The best part is, these colors are naturally calming.

    1) Belle Noel ‘Glamrock’ rose water opal ring
    2) Modcloth statement of the art necklace
    3) Brightly Twisted tie dye scarf
    4) Madewell dip-dye boyshirt
    5) Modcloth Imprinted with Joy dress

    Trend #3: Unique Stripes

Stripes have been popular for a while now, but these stripes are anything but typical. These stripes run in different directions, are different colors and widths, and they’re not afraid to mix and mingle. Have fun with them!

    1) Piperlime Splendid striped espadrilles
    2) Madewell striped easy tee
    3) French Connection stripe t-shirt dress
    4) Anthropologie ruched stripes column dress
    5) Bailey 44 synchronized diving dress

    Trend #4: Cut-outs & Sheer Panels

So, don’t let the words “sheer” or “cut-out” in this next trend scare you. Showing a little bit of skin can still be completely demure. Okay sure, so it can be sexy, too. I guess it’s all up to you and how you style it.

    1) French Connection ‘Brigit’ cut-out flats
    2) Forever 21 Solid Hi-Low Skirt
    3) AG Jeans vintage lace tee
    4) Asos Rare floral embroidered shirt
    5) Asos Hazard heeled sandals

    Trend #5: Digital Prints

This last trend feels a little art school. Imagine taking one of your favorite photographs and turning it into a killer piece of clothing … that’s basically this trend! It may be a little silly or a little cheeky, but it’s very now.

    1) French Sole ‘Loop’ flat
    2) J. Crew Collection silk panel peony sweatshirt
    3) Asos t-shirt with kitten pocket
    4) Modcloth Glam Canyon dress
    5) Modcloth Aspire to Inspire dress

Other recent trends that are here to stay for the long haul: chambray denim, monochromatic looks, romantic ruffles and 1990s style. One main thing to remember: don’t abandon your personal style just because these latest trends hit the scene. Instead, pick and choose pieces here and there that you can incorporate into your existing wardrobe. The best thing about fashion right now is that you can totally mix colors, patterns and textures together … so have fun with it. I hope this post gave you some helpful hints for adding spring 2013 trends into your wardrobe on a budget!

    xoxo

I need the cat t-shirt! I also am a big proponent of wearing stripes. Lots of them....oh and now I sound like a crazy cat lady.

I really cant stand the digital prints trend... not my favorite. BUT I dooo love the sheer panels!! I'm all about it... it adds a little sexiness to any look. Have any of you seen the new "clear" platform shoes from Jeffrey Campbell and other high fashion brands? What do you all think about that?

I love platforms. I secretly want them to come back so I can stop wearing these painfully high stilettos. :)
