Summer is here and racing fans like me all know that we should be sipping the Derby and Southern classic: the Mint Julep. So in honor of I'll Have Another's Triple Crown run, which ends in glory or tears at the June 9 Belmont Stakes, let's all have another.
Old Fashioned, The Swanky Drink
Try this recipe from the KCRW Good Food blog for a hot summer afternoon (but make sure to prepare it in advance!). Great for all summer days, not just racing days.
Makes 8 drinks
The What:
½ cup sugar
½ cup water
2 bunches of fresh mint leaves
Kentucky Burbon
The How:
1. Bring equal parts sugar and water to a boil and allow the sugar to dissolve. Steep one bunch of mint in the hot simple syrup overnight until cool and thickened. Strain out the mint.
2. Put 2 Tbsp. of mint simple syrup in a chilled Julep glass (metal cup), put a few mint leaves in the bottom of the glass and bruise the mint (do not overdo this or it will become bitter). Add crushed ice to the mixture and fill with as much Kentucky Bourbon as the glass will hold. Repeat for each drink.
3. Sip slowly from a straw.
Cheers!

In addition to "Perroquet" that you drink during the heat of summer, i give you the recipe of the famous cocktail "Bellini" for night "VIP" in the summer, near the pool.
Coktail Bellini:
• 7/10 of prosecco or brut champagne or sparkling wine
• 3/10 of a white peach juice
• 1 sprig of red currants
• zest of 1/2 lime untreated
• sugar
The Bellini was invented in 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, owner of the famous Harry's Bar in Venice. Because of its pinkish color which reminded Cipriani of the toga of a saint in a painting by Giovanni Bellini, he named the cocktail Bellini.
The drink became a seasonal specialty at Harry's Bar in Venice, a local favorite of Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis and Orson Welles. Later it became very popular at Harry's Bar in New York. -
Moscow Mule:
Muddle 3 lime wedges (i.e., 3 1/8 slices) with 1.5 oz vodka (I'm partial to Tito's).
Pour into a double old fashioned glass, top with ginger beer (Gosling's is quite good).
Give it a quick roll & enjoy.
Disclaimer: not responsible for an inability to stop drinking these ridiculously delicious drinks. -

Perroquet (parrot) or cocktail "Pastis" with green mint syrup. Served from Saint Tropez to Monaco, or better, in Provence and the Riviera Ligure di Ponente (Italy).
- 1/5 of Pastis Ricard or "51". You can substitute an alternative with Anisette, Sambuca Italian, Greek Ouzo, Turkish Raki)
- 1/5 of mint syrup
- 3/5 of water without gas
- ice as you want
Good drink!!!
