So all the news this week is about the premiere of The Walking Dead. I DVR that shiz so no spoilers please. But AMC premiered the pilot of another show that same night - Comic Book Men with my friend Kevin Smith. I’d been looking forward to capping off my birthday weekend by tapping into nerdville so of course I watched.

Kevin Smith owns this comic book store in Jersey called Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. He doesn’t actually work there. He still writes and directs movies sometimes but he does show up for a podcast where him and the three guys that do actually work there plus another big-bearded guy that just hangs out at the store way too much to poke fun at one of the other employees, sit around a table with mics and talk about the people that walked into the store trying to sell their hopefully-one-of-a-kind memorabilia - A Jack Kirby Thor poster, a Dawn of the Dead movie poster, a Million Dollar Man toy, a Chucky doll. Reminded me of Pawn Stars.
My honest assessment: I was really looking forward to this series (and still am, it’s only had it’s first episode), but I wanted to see more Smith and more comic books and more real customers just walk into the store. Nobody deals with people better than Kevin - have you seen this? *And this video is NSFW!! (It's Kevin Smith, y'all!).
And I half expected Rosario Dawson to also work at the store. It's a little weird that there are no chicks there. Actually, thinking on it a second longer, it's not weird at all.
Did you watch? Do you care? Favorite comic book?

I am a semi comic book nerd...i am more of a sci fi/fantasy movie/tv show nerd and I love this show. Its fun for me because i feel pretty awesome that 1. I understand everything they are talking about and 2. I get their humor!
I would love for them to show some normal Women/girls/chicks that are actual fans. We are out there...we just arent all creepy nerdy looking! (I shouldnt say that since my profile pic is what it is)!!! LOL -

Hi! Long time fan from Boston. Big comic book guy. Gotta say, I didn't like Comic Book Men that much. I think it reinforced all the negative "comic book nerd" stereotypes. Comic book culture gets a TV show representative and oh look, its a bunch of meek, nerdy type guys sitting in a basement talking about which fictional woman they want to bone. And, like you said, there were no women! Comics are so awesome, and the fan base is so diverse and rich, that it's disappointing to see the same old tropes in Comic Book Men. We'll see if the shows any good as it goes on, but for now, I'm saving my DVR space for Game of Thrones, Ellen, and Parks and Rec. -
Long time fan of yours and Kev's work. Loved Comic Book Men!! I do have to agree that is a little Pawn Star-ish. Hope AMC allows Kev to throw in some SIR flare. Andres M has a good suggestion about bringing some people from the industry to the show. Here's a question for you, When is Hollywood gonna make a good Superheroine movie? Btw, Michelle Pfeiffer was a better Catwoman than Halle Berry, just saying. -
Hey Banks! I watched the show and definitely liked it. If I wasn't into hero comics, I might not really care for it. It didn't touch too much on current comic culture, which is a bit of a bummer. Hopefully they'll start reviewing new comics, hero and indie a-like, and bringing on writers and artists to talk on the podcast. Right now the Pawn Star formula for old comic memorabilia isn't strong enough to make this show last.
FYI! Love the new blog. The design is super clean!
PS. my fav books at the moment are Brian Wood's Northlanders, Kirkman's Theif of Theives, the new Batwoman (god the art is so good.) and Penguin series. -
Love Kevin Smith! He's so ballsy and I love hearing him go on and on and I love that he realizes he can go on and on but is so down-to-earth about it. It would be awesome to sit around and talk philosophy with this genius disguised as a normal. Red State blew my mindâthat sensation that a movie could take ANY turn was so out of the ordinary and sooo refreshing. I'll have to check out Comic Book Men, sorry to say I didn't even know it existed.
