I'm still waiting for the award show where they hand out the accolades - with subsequent seven digit salaries - for 'Best Parking Lot Attendant', 'Best Factory Production Line Worker', 'Best Department Level Administrative Assistant', 'Best Data Entry Operator', 'Best Coal Miner', 'Best Strawberry Picker', 'Best Day Laborer', 'Best Taxi Driver', 'Best Cashier', 'Best Janitor', 'Best Mid-Wife', 'Best Technical Support Operator', 'Best Bank Teller', 'Best Sweatshop Worker', 'Best Receptionist', 'Best Longshoreman', 'Best Beautician', 'Best Masseuse', 'Best Jack Hammer Operator', 'Best Prostitute', 'Best Hay Press Operator', 'Best Lifeguard', 'Best Movie Theater Employee', 'Best Security Guard', 'Best <insert your shitty job here>'. Because lets face it, no matter what job you have, unless you're very successful in the entertainment industry no one is ever going to come up to you and tell you how good you are at it.
Last week one of my very closest friends a molecular biologist (when you're a scientist, you know scientists) who has spent thirty years researching cancer, which is incredibly hard work, told me two things: 1. The molecule she developed over the last few years has completed its clinical trials and stopped all non-hemolytic cancers (cancers that do not destroy or damage the development of red blood cells) from growing in 100% of the patients getting it. It doesn't cure cancer, it stops it from advancing, it buys you infinite time to find a cure, or for other cures to work. It is a huge breakthrough.
And 2. The lab she works at is closing and although the drug will go on to be manufactured somewhere, she is out of a job by year's end. Who's going to hire a 59 year old person for a job that takes decades?
The only thing worse than working (if you're not a movie star, in which case working is apparently great fun, they always say so) is not working. So why again do successful actors, and musicians get big televised national awards, huge salaries, lavish parties, universal adoration and janitors don't? They're just the person that cleans up your kid's puke in isle three. -
