Lionsgate just officially announced that Philip Seymour Hoffman will be playing Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Watch this video about the first person I called when I got the part!
Now there’s even more reason for me to get excited about getting back into character as Effie! We may not have many scenes together, but I’m amped to be part of the same project. I mean, listen—that man was just nominated for a Tony! (for his Broadway run as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman)
Shooting for Catching Fire starts this fall and the movie will come out November 22, 2013.
On to Finnick! Who do you want to see in Catching Fire?

I think Hoffman will be brilliant. He is a phenomenal actor and will do the part proud.
As for Finnick, I think Hunter Parrish would be perfect. His acting has been proven in Weeds, where he has fantastic depth. And he's dreamy. As for Johanna, ever since Kristen Bell said she wanted to play the part I can't picture anyone else. She seems perfect to me.
To Megan, I also think Jeremy Renner would be amazing as Boggs. I kept picturing him in that role. -

since sixth grade when i read the books i wanted Tim Burton to direct hunger games, cause its kinda dark and demented that theres children killing each other and hes awesome at those kinds of movies, also because he would most likely cast Johnny Depp and I would love to see Johnny Depp as Finnick:) lol but i am very glad that they chose you to be Effie, there couldn't have been anyone more perfect for the role than you:) -
I'm so glad we've finally got some Catching Fire casting news! I can't wait to see who we get as Finnick and Johanna too. I wouldn't mind if they were unknown actors who got given the roles, but I love the idea of Garrett Hedlund playing Finnick. He isn't in it until Mockingjay, but my dreamcast for Boggs is Jeremy Renner... -
I agree with everyone else, this was a brilliant bit of casting. Hoffman feels so natural for the role. -
ahhhhh this is so exciting! i think he'll be a great Plutarch - he's an amazing actor and will be great in this role. Can't wait until they announce Finnick! :) -
I think Mr. Hoffman is an excellent choice for Plutarch! He is an amazing actor and I believe he will just add that little something to make Plutarch seem more human. Can't wait to hear the rest of the cast. So excited for Catching fire to come out. I absolutely loved the Hunger Games. Thanks for sharing Elizabeth! -
PS The other casting rumor that really got me excited was Cicely Tyson as Mags. Remember that scene in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman when she hobbles painfully up a long walkway to drink from the Whites Only fountain -- and now picture her as Mags kissing Finnick and then walking calmly to her death in the poison fog. -
I would love to have Garrett Hedlund play Finnick :D I find that he'll be able to hold up on the humourous scenes, and the scenes that will be more emotionally trying for the cast and the audience, and he fits what I had thought Finnick would look like, with a strong jawline, soft, kind eyes, and the tousled hair :) -
I'm really excited about Hoffman as Plutarch. Hoffman often plays rather scruffy, down-at-the-heels types, so I was having a little trouble seeing him as a high ranking Capitol Citizen until I watched him as Truman Capote: the polish, the little affectations, the serious edge under the glitter. I can't wait to see how his Plutarch evolves.
As for Finnick, I just hope that Lionsgate puts acting ability over teen heart-throb glamor. Whoever plays Finnick need to be able carry both the humorous scenes, and the scenes that reveal Finnick's tragic past.
Casting someone like Hoffman signals to me that the studio is serious about creating a really great film, not just a money-making YA hit. Hooray! -
Great actor. Liked him in Doubt et. al.
Hunger Games meanwhile will be out on DVD soon. Already reserved it! -
Way to go! I'm excited too about Philip Seymour Hoffman, he's SUPER GREAT! The cast is getting even more exceptional!
As for Finnick, my number one choice was Chris Hemsworth, but since Liam is in the cast already, that is probably not possible... But lately I've got my eyes on Derek Theler (Danny in ABC Family TV serie Baby Daddy)! I think he would be great as Finnick, he's got the WHOLE PACKAGE!
