MTV has just announced their nominees for the 2012 Video Music Awards and they rock in more ways than one. Shall we take a closer look? Why not? We're here.
Music videos are so intricate these days that they’re basically mini-movies. They’re so well produced, in fact, that the VMAs actually have Oscar-like categories like Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.

Although you can’t vote on these “professional” categories, they’re a great source of inspiration for anyone who wants to get into filmmaking. Herewith, I give you a few fantastic videos nominated in the professional categories this year:
Regina Spektor “All the Rowboats” – Nominated for Best Art Direction
Get More: Regina Spektor, All The Rowboats, Music, More Music Videos
M.I.A. “Bad Girls” – Nominated for Best Cinematography
Frank Ocean “Swim Good” – Nominated for Best Direction
Watch The Throne “Paris” – Nominated for Best Editing
Rihanna “Where Have You Been” – Nominated for Best Visual Effects
Remember when "Mickey" just had some cheerleaders? No more! Videos aren't so much about the music - when was the last time you watched MTV for the music? They’re a proving ground for innovative directors and an opportunity for artists to push the envelope. In fact, past winners like Valerie Dayton and Jonathon Faris, have launched successful careers as feature film directors after winning VMAs (Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks). So, all of you aspiring filmmakers, take note! Watch this year’s VMA nominees, and be sure to vote (for the non-professional categories) before the awards show airs September 6.
What are your picks for the VMAs this year?
